The properties of stainless and heat-resistant steels are determined by the materials involved in chemical reactions, the reaction products, and the temperatures and mechanical stress conditions governing the process.
The interaction of the chemical, thermal and mechanical factors that might have an impact on performance imposes a wide variety of requirements, which must be taken into consideration when selecting the materials to be used. These include:
  • corrosion resistance in gases, aqueous solutions and acids
  • adequate strength and toughness, even under conditions of thermal stress
  • hot and cold formability, machinability and
  • suitability for welding
